   Must-Visit Attractions in Okayama

1. Okayama Castle

Okayama Castle, a cultural icon of Okayama City, stands as a must-visit attraction. Constructed in 1597 by the Ukita Clan, rulers of the region then, its main tower boasts a striking dark exterior covered with black clapboards, earning it the nickname "Crow Castle."

Featuring an unconventional pentagonal base instead of the typical square, the castle tower comprises four sections and six floors. Despite its destruction in WWII, it has been faithfully reconstructed to its original design, allowing visitors to bask in its former grandeur today.

While the interior now reflects a modern style, a visit remains worthwhile as it hosts a museum offering a captivating insight into its history. The observatory on the top floor presents splendid views of the surrounding garden and the city. Additionally, visitors can enjoy trying on the attire of lords and princesses at no cost!

Reaching its present form in 1863, it is widely acclaimed as one of Japan's Three Great Gardens.

The garden covers an area of approximately 14 hectares and showcases traditional Japanese landscaping. Within its grounds, you'll also discover traditional tea houses, temples, and rest houses once used by feudal lords.

This Shinto shrine is dedicated to the legendary Japanese prince "Kibitsuhiko-no-Mikoto," central to the famous local tale of Momotaro (Peach Boy) defeating demons—a story believed to stem from legends of Kibitsuhiko-no-Mikoto vanquishing evil spirits. Today, people come here to pray for fertility and safe births.
